Book Review: Under the Cover of Darkness

  Hi everyone,

I recently finished Under the Cover of Darkness by A.K. Barr. I gave this book 3.9 out of 5 stars on Goodreads. You can see more about what this book is abouhere before heading in to my review.  Another bookish thing you can check out is my November TBR 2020 and September wrap up on TikTok @brinadancer to see it and the other books I'm reading this month. I also have up a book haul of books I've recently gotten over there as well. I'd love to know what your reading this month let me know either here in the comments or on my video. Also I received this book from the author so huge thank you to them for sending me this book.

Hopping on in to the review. I'll keep this as spoiler free. So I picked up this book not really know what it was about. I will say that may have been a good thing since I didn't have any expectations. I think that the concept of there being goddess and them being sent to another world is a really cool idea and I like the idea that this was more of a high fantasy. I do wish that we had more world building since it was a bit confusing at times to tell if we were more in a high fantasy or modern urban setting. On a similar note I think it was a little confusing with the flashbacks once we got to the main action of the book. Also if you know me you know I'm not the biggest fan of multiple points of view unless there really well done, this one there were so many characters I think it was a bit too much since we get the knights, the goddesses and anyone else that may be in contact with theses characters.

Moving in to what I did enjoy. I love the fact that the goddess had multiple powers I want more on the powers and how they are going to use them. I'm a sucker for girl power. I also really like the fact that each goddess gets a familiar. I think this is a really cool feature for each of them. Secondly, I liked the knights. Kayden is a really great character along with the other knights. I think these characters were well executed.

Overall I'm glad I made it though this one. I would recommended it if your looking for a interesting read. If you have read this one I love to know your thoughts in the comments.

Lastly, if your looking for other books I have reviews up for Arc of A Scythe Trilogy up, Marked, and the Lost Heroes of Olympus series: The Lost HeroSon of Neptune and Mark of Athena. And  A Storm of Magic and many more through out my blog.

Thanks for reading,  please don’t forget to like, comment, and follow for more of my posts.

Book Review: A Storm of Glass and Stars

   Hi everyone,

I recently finished A Storm of Glass and Stars by Marion Blackwood. I gave this book 4.8 out of 5 stars on Goodreads. You can see more about what this book is abouhere before heading in to my review.  Another bookish thing you can check out is my October TBR 2020 and September wrap up on TikTok @brinadancer to see it and the other books I'm reading this month. I also have up a book haul of books I've recently gotten over there as well. I'd love to know what your reading this month let me know either here in the comments or on my video. Also, I received an ARC of this book from the author. So huge thank you to Marion Blackwood to sending me this book.

Hopping on in to the review. Before reading this make sure you've read the other books in the series. I'd hate to spoil anything for you!  I was super excited to get this one and start it. I love Storm as a character and couldn't wait to see where this one went since we left off last time with them taking over Pernula. This one started out interesting though since Storm decided that she wanted to go explore on her own which ends up getting her in trouble like usual. By trouble I mean her, Shade and Elaran end up being taken by the star elves. I love the star elf aesthetic though all glass, white, having extravagant balls that kind of thing. Super on point. Totally not Storms thing this is where it really got good I would definitely say this one is a plot twist kind of thing going on. It really surprised me I won't say exactly what happens so you can read to find out but there were times I was saying to myself  "What the ****!! This can't be happening." Which is why I put 4.8 since my feels were all messed up. lol I'm really glad it all worked out in the end and that Storm and all her friends prevail. Also, I'm finally glad we get a little Storm and Shade action like come on the tension between these two is incredible. I really hope there is more of that in the next novel along with more about these mystical Storm Casters

Overall I would recommended this book especially if you love Storm and I totally think this one is better than the last one because of the blood elfs. This also a fairly easy read so it's good to pick up and read almost all at once. I want to again say thank you to Marion Blackwood for sending me this book. It was great and I can't wait for the next one

Lastly, if your looking for other books I have reviews up for the other first book and second book in Marion;s series.  A Storm of Silver and Ash , A Storm of Shadows and Pearls , A Storm of Smoke and Flame.

Book Review: The Blackthorn Key

 Hi everyone,
I recently finished The Blackthorn Key by Kevin Sands. I gave this book 5 out of 5 stars on Goodreads. You can see more about what this book is abouhere before heading in to my review.  Another bookish thing you can check out is my August TBR 2020 and July wrap up on TikTok @brinadancer to see it and the other books I'm reading this month. I also have up a book haul of books I got before the lock down for COVID-19 you can check it out here. I'd love to know what your reading this month let me know either here in the comments or on my video.

Hopping on in to the review. I'll try not to give to much away and keep this spoiler free. I literally just picked this up because of the book blurbs. It sounded so interesting because it said an "apprentices journey, hidden codes, puzzles and secret societies" and it came with a warning page. What more could you want! I was so shocked by this book it was so good, super easy and fast to read since its middle grade. I could not put it down I read the whole book in 3 days while on vacation.

I really liked the character of Christopher he is a super fun and rambunctious boy. I love that he's an apprentice to an apothecary and that his best friend helps to take care of him after things start going crazy. I also really liked the mystery aspect and the hidden codes and puzzles in the one. They were super entertaining. I think they were well woven in to the story. I also liked that every recipe that Christoper goes to make is an actual recipes from the 1600, it's totally crazy. Also, I appreciate Tom, the best friend, that goes along with pretty much everything Christopher does even if it gets him in trouble. I will say I think that he portrayal of how children were treated in this is accurate since most kids during this time period were expected to behave a certain way. So just a slight warning on that note.

I would definitely recommend this one. Since I totally fell in love it with and can't wait to get the next books in the series. I really liked that it was so fast to read and super entertaining. It was a page turner for sure.

Lastly, if your looking for other books I have reviews up for Arc of A Scythe Trilogy up, Marked, and the Lost Heroes of Olympus series: The Lost HeroSon of Neptune and Mark of Athena. And  A Storm of Magic and many more through out my blog.

If you've read this book let me know what your thoughts are and what your reading right now in the comments.

Book Review: A Storm of Smoke and Flame

 Hi everyone,
I recently finished A Storm of Smoke and Flame by Marion Blackwood . I gave this book 4.6 out of 5 stars on Goodreads. You can see more about what this book is about here before heading in to my review.  Another bookish thing you can check out is my August TBR 2020 and July wrap up on TikTok @brinadancer to see it and the other books I'm reading this month. I also have up a book haul of books you can check it out here. With hopefully another haul coming soon. I'd love to know what your reading this month as week let me know either here in the comments or on my video.  Also, I received an ARC of this book from the author. So huge thank you to Marion Blackwood to sending me this book.

Hopping on in to the review. Before reading this make sure you've read the first two books. I'd hate to spoil anything for you!  I was super excited to get this one and start it. I love Storm as a character and couldn't wait to see where this one went. I loved the way that this novel started since Storm and Shade have decided that it's time to go to the Pernulians and see there city. This was a great way to start off in to a new adventure. Let's just take a second to appreciate the sexual tension between Storm and Shade in this one. Like I think there is way more going on between those two than what Storm lets on.
Moving on lol!
Once we got to the city of Pernula though I liked all the characters we were introduced to like Zania and her sister Norah but I definitely wanted a little more action. This was a little different of a turn from the past two books where there was way more action and killing. This one was more political intrigue and espionage in taking over the Pernulian government. I was totally not expecting that when I started this, I definitely would say this one keeps you on you toes since you never know what's going to happen next. I did like the ending. Again I want to see what happens to Storm and her friends in the next book.

Overall I would recommended this book especially if you love Storm and want an adventure. This also a fairly easy read so it's good to pick up and read almost all at once. I want to again say thank you to Marion Blackwood for sending me this book. It was great and I can't wait for the next one

Lastly, if your looking for other books I have reviews up for the other first book and second book in Marion;s series.  A Storm of Silver and Ash and A Storm of Shadows and Pearls
Here are some other review I have up as well: Arc of A Scythe Trilogy up, Marked, and the Lost Heroes of Olympus series: The Lost HeroSon of Neptune and Mark of Athena. And  A Storm of Magic.

Book Review: Slayer

Hi everyone,
I recently finished Slayer by Kiersten White. I gave this book 3.7 out of 5 stars on Goodreads. You can see more about what this book is about here before heading in to my review.  Another bookish thing you can check out is my August TBR 2020 and July wrap up on TikTok @brinadancer to see it and the other books I'm reading this month. I also have up a book haul of books I got before the lock down for COVID-19 you can check it out here. I'd love to know what your reading this month as week let me know either here in the comments or on my video.

Hopping on in to the review.  I started this because it sounded interesting and because I love Buffy the Vampire Slayer. That being said I have not finished all of the season of Buffy, which you probably should do before reading this book. Although I was able to figure out most things with a few quick google searches but if you don't want to be spoiled you should definitely watch all of the series before reading Slayer.

I did enjoy this novel. I do wish it would have been a little faster and not so slow there were so many parts that were just down time or Nina fighting with herself. I think this could have been cut out. To avoid spoilers I won't say what shes fighting about so you'll just have to read to find out. I also like the other characters in the book like Rhy's, Cillian and Leo and the mystery aspect was pretty well written as to who the bad guy is. Again I just wish it would have been a little faster.

I think this is an interesting read especially if you really like Buffy and have watched all the series. I would definitely think you would enjoy this one. If you have you should definitely try watching Buffy and then give this a read.

Lastly, if your looking for other books I have reviews up for Arc of A Scythe Trilogy up, Marked, and the Lost Heroes of Olympus series: The Lost HeroSon of Neptune and Mark of Athena. And  A Storm of Magic.

If you've read this book let me know what your thoughts are and what your reading right now in the comments.

Book Review: Nexus

Hi everyone,
I recently finished Nexus by Sasha Alsberg and Lindsay Cummings. I gave this book 3.8 out of 5 stars on Goodreads. You can see more about what this book is about here before heading in to my review.  Make sure you go check out my June TBRQuarantine Haul to see more books I'm reading.

Now hopping on in to the review this is as spoiler free. I started this book because I wanted to read some sci-fi but I will say it had been quite a while since I had read Zenith. So I was a bit confused at the beginning since I couldn't remember everything that happened at the end of Zenith. That being said after I went back over Zenith I really enjoyed this one. I think I like Nexus even better than Zenith since it wasn't as long and there weren't a whole lot of extra scenes that weren't necessary. Also, this reminded me quite a lot of Winter from the Lunar Chronicles since there was a similar set up of a rebel taking down an evil queen in space. It didn't bother me too much that this one was in different points of view since we not only following Andy, but Dex, Nor and Valen as characters too. I did like the slight twist of who the villain is at the end. It was a good little surprise.

Overall I would recommend is one especially if you like supporting YouTube authors. I love Sasha's channel and have been watching her for years. I also like Lindsay Cummings as an author she has some great other Sci-fi novels. I would definitely say if you can marathon this duology you should so your not as confused as I was. I would also recommend it if you were a big fan of the Lunar Chronicles.

That's all for this book review. Thanks for reading,  please don’t forget to like, comment, and follow for more of my posts.

Book Review: The Last Magician

Hi everyone,
I recently finished The Last Magician by Lisa Maxwell. I gave this book 3.8 out of 5 stars on Goodreads. You can see more about what this book is about here before heading in to my review.  Make sure you go check out my May TBRQuarantine Haul to see more books I'm reading.

Now hopping on in to the review this is as spoiler free. So first off lets start with how slow this book is. I was totally not expecting it to be as slow as it was. There definitely were some action parts but the rest is pretty slow. I think this is due to this being a first book and  there are so many characters and world building between the two different time periods. I would say that more than half the book is really focused on characters. This book also does points of view a little weird since all our chapters have titles but not necessarily the character that were in. So that kinda of threw me a little for the writing, if you've been here awhile you would know I like a third person omniscient kind of view or at least character labeling. That being said I really liked Esta for our main character and Harte as the magician. They were a really excellent blend of characters and personalities. They played well off of each other. I also liked the feel of old New York and the gang boss aspect. It was definitely a lot of double crossing and who's working for who kind of thing going on. It add the the air of the who is really the bad guy and who can you trust atmosphere.
I also liked the magic and how thought out their system is, which types of magic different people have and how they practice magic. I think that made it pretty interesting. I just wish it would have been a little faster.
I definitely loved the end though the cliff hanger is great and the discovery's that Esta finds our about herself a really a good kicker. So I definitely glad I made it to the end and finished it.
Overall I would recommend this one to those who really want to invest in the story since I think there are two more books. I know I have the second one, The Devil's Thief, already and a third The Serpent's Curse coming later this year (Maybe).  I would also recommended that you give this one a read when you have plenty of time and can really focus on the building of characters and the world. Which right now we all have a lot of time considerations the real world situation. I would say this was a prefect quarantine read since it's got a lot to it and is a pretty hefty book at 500 pages.

That's all for this book review. Thanks for reading,  please don’t forget to like, comment, and follow for more of my posts.

Book Review: A Storm of Magic

Hi everyone,
I recently finished A Storm of Magic by Ashley Laino. I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars on Goodreads. You can see more about what this book is about here before heading in to my review.   Before I get in to the review you can check out my March 2020 TBR to see it and the other books I'm reading this month. I also have up a book haul of books I got before the lock down for COVID-19 you can check it out here. I'd love to know what your reading this month as week let me know either here in the comments or on my video.

Now hopping on in to the review and this is spoiler free. So first off I received this book from BLKDOG Publishing. You can check them out here. They so graciously sent me this book.
I was initially drawn to this book because it is about magic and witches and a magician so totally my thing since I'm a magician's assistant myself. Once I got in to reading this though I found it was way closer to the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina on Netflix which is awesome. I really enjoyed this novel, the characters and the story, it was all excellent. With out giving too much away I will say that Mirah and Darian are pretty good characters with interesting backgrounds. I almost like Darian's story more since we get a back story for him. I also liked that we had somewhat of a magical school aspect for Mirah to go to. One thing I didn't like was the style of writing and I not entirely sure if it was the copy I got but there were so many grammar and writing issues. Which trust me if I'm seeing them its a problem cause I'm not the best at English myself. Even though this was an issue this story and concept was still good.

Over all I enjoyed this book and would recommend it especially if your a fan of the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Also, if your looking for other books I have reviews up for Scythe,   Marked, and the Lost Heroes of Olympus series: The Lost HeroSon of Neptune and Mark of Athena.

If you've read this book let me know what your thoughts are and what your reading right now in the comments.

New Year Resolutions Book Tag

Hey everyone,
I haven't done a book tag in so long I figured this one would be prefect since we're at the beginning of the year still.  I got this tag from Kath Reads. You can check out  her post here. I know there are several others who have done this tag as well. I actually did a similar tag back when I first started blogging. This tag really made me think through all the books I still have left on my TBR all these years later.  Also, you can see more about each book by clicking on the pictures below.

Now lets get on in to this tag.
1. An author you’d like to read (that you’ve never read before).

I definitely want to get in to some of P.C. Casts books. I have the first 5 books in the House of Night Series and Moon Chosen (Tales of the New World series) These have been on my TBR for a while and I've never read them. I think they look super interesting since their about Vampires and Warewolfs.

2. A book you’d like to read.

I would really like to get to A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Swab. I heard great things about this series but I've never actually gotten to it. If you've read this book what did you think?

3. A classic you’d like to read.

Would Lord of the Rings count for this? I'm going to say it does. Lol I've read the hobbit but I haven't ever gotten to the main series Lord of the Rings.

4. A book you’d like to re-read.

Possibly the Lux series by Jennifer L. Armentrout. I can't really decide though I have so many other books that I need to read its hard to re-read them.

5. A book you’ve had for ages and want to read.

I would really like to get in to the Sweep Series. I've literally had it on my shelf for years now. I definitely need to try and get to that series this year.

6. A big book you’d like to read.

I definitaly need to get though A Court of Mist and Fury. I just haven't gotten to it since it is a really large book but I've been an a big book kick lately since I have been reading the heroes of olympus series. They are not small books most of them have over 400 pages which I was surprised about. So hopefully I'll get to ACOMAF this year.

7. An author you’ve previously read and want to read more of.

I definitely want to read more Jeanine Frost. I totally fell in love with her Vampire Hunter series. It was so fantastic. I can wait to see where the whole series goes. I know it quite a few books but I think it will be worth it.

8. A book you got for Christmas and would like to read.

I got Angel Fall by I would really like to get to this book since it has been on my TBR for a while and I just now did get a copy.

9. A series you want to read from start to finish.

The Illuminate Files. I have yet to read these they look super interesting though and I've had the first one on my shelf for awhile. I would really like to get to the series to really see what it is all about.
10. A series you want to finish that you’ve already started.

The Heroes of Olympus by Rick Riordan. I've actually already finished The Lost Hero, The Son of Neptune which I have reviews for and I'm almost through The Mark of Athena. I hope I can finish the last 2 pretty soon.

11. Do you set reading goals? If so, how many books do you want to read in 2017?

I do, you can join me on GoodReads in trying to reach a goal of 25 books this year. What are you reading resolutions for this year? Let me know below.
Also, if you want you can  do this tag and link it below I'd love to see your answers.

Book Review: The Son of Neptune

Hi everyone,
I recently finished The Son of Neptune by Rick Riordan. I gave this book 5 out of 5 stars on Goodreads. You can see more about what this book is about here before heading in to my review.  This is the second book in The Heroes of Olympus series. I think there are 5 books all together in the series. Plus some of my favorite characters from past books. Before I get in to the review too much you can check out my January 2020 TBR to see it and the other books I'm reading this month. I'd love to know what your reading this month as week let me know either here in the comments or on my video.

Now hopping on in to the review and this is spoiler free: The Son of Neptune follows three heroes, two new: Hazel and Frank and then of course Percy from the Percy Jackson Series. This second book is the other half from the first book it's essentially a parallel to Jason story from The Lost Hero. This way were setting up both sides and all the heroes that will be in the next few books in the series. I will say I think I enjoyed this second one more than the first since I love Percy's character and I thought that this one went way faster than The Lost Hero. It didn't seem to have as may down points. Maybe because there wasn't as much information about the god and such to get though and also the time were Jason's story took months Percy's was only a few weeks and he spend a few months either asleep or wondering around before he made it it Camp Jupiter.
I really enjoyed our heroes Hazel and Frank. Plus the little cameo of Nico. Nico was another of my favorite characters from The Percy series; love that he is a son of Hades. To keep it spoiler free I'll just say that Hazel and Frank have pretty awesome backgrounds. I love the way their pasts are intertwined in to the story and that we discover more about each of the as the story goes along.
Lastly, the story as a whole was pretty awesome. I think since this paralleled to Jason story this one just seemed so much faster and more interesting. It definitely followed the traditional Riordan story set (which is get a quest, go on quest, beat said evil and return home) but with way more twists and character building.
Over all I really enjoyed this book I've already started on the third one the Mark of Athena since I got really excited at the end of Son of Neptune. I definitively can't wait to see where all out heroes go next.

If you've read this book let me know what your thoughts are and what your reading right now in the comments.

Thanks for reading,  please don’t forget to like, comment, and follow for more of my posts.

Book Review: The Lost Hero

Hi everyone,
I recently finished The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan. I gave this book 4.5 out of 5 stars on Goodreads. You can see more about what this book is abouhere before heading in to my review.  This is the first book in The Heroes of Olympus series. I think there are 5 books all together in the series. Plus some of my favorite characters from past books. Before I get in to the review too much you can check out my January 2020 TBR to see it and the other books I'm reading this month. I'd love to know what your reading this month as week let me know either here in the comments or on my video.

Now hopping on in to the review and this is spoiler free: The Lost Hero follows three new heroes: Jason, Piper and Leo. These heroes go on a new journey that starts off the series. Jason is our main character and he wakes up on a bus with Piper and Leo. Jason has no memory of the past  and must journey to get his memory back though this first book and to stop the world for being destroyed.
I really enjoyed these new characters especially Piper. I love that she is a daughter of Aphrodite and can charm speak.
Another part of this series and book that I like is the blending of Roman and Greek gods and culture. I think this is super cool and really interesting since I am not as familiar with Roman Gods.
One thing I didn't like about this was it was a bit slow at times. Even though there were interesting parts there was just a lot of information to cover with this first book. Also, since Jason had amnesia and couldn't remember everything it was a bit frustrating that there wasn't a way to find out more till the end of the story.
Over all I really enjoyed this book I've already started on the second one Son of Neptune since I wanted to see how this story goes. I can't wait till we get all of our heroes together for an epic battle.

If you've read this book let me know what your thoughts are and what your reading right now in the comments.
