This is the book summary from Goodreads: "After serving out a year of hard labor in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin.
Her opponents are men-thieves and assassins and warriors from across the empire, each sponsored by a member of the king's council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she'll serve the kingdom for four years and then be granted her freedom. Celaena finds her training sessions with the captain of the guard, Westfall, challenging and exhilirating. But she's bored stiff by court life. Things get a little more interesting when the prince starts to show interest in her... but it's the gruff Captain Westfall who seems to understand her best.
Then one of the other contestants turns up dead... quickly followed by another. Can Celaena figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim? As the young assassin investigates, her search leads her to discover a greater destiny than she could possibly have imagined."
I loved Celaena's character she is such a bad-ass there is no other way to say it, sorry for the language. She is just so much like a hard core assassin and a typical girl at the same time. She really is a great character to follow through this story.
I also really like the main plot of there's so much mystery as to why their kingdom has become this way. At the same time their are still traces of the "old ways" left. The story takes you on a crazy journey; once you read this one you'll definitely need the next ones so you can keep reading.
The only thing that I find a little off is the love triangle if you can really call it that between Celaena, Chole, and Dorin. I kind fell like Celaene doesn't need a man really cause she such a strong character but I get that she human and wants someone to love.
I would recommend this book to anyone, especially if they like high fantasy with a similar "game" to the Hunger Games. Plus all the magic and political themes are just great. I would definitely recommend that you give this book a try.
