I gave Truthwitch 4 out of 5 stars on GoodReads.
This is the GoodReads Synopsis:
"In a continent on the edge of war, two witches hold its fate in their hands.
Young witches Safiya and Iseult have a habit of finding trouble. After clashing with a powerful Guildmaster and his ruthless Bloodwitch bodyguard, the friends are forced to flee their home.
Safi must avoid capture at all costs as she's a rare Truthwitch, able to discern truth from lies. Many would kill for her magic, so Safi must keep it hidden - lest she be used in the struggle between empires. And Iseult's true powers are hidden even from herself.
In a chance encounter at Court, Safi meets Prince Merik and makes him a reluctant ally. However, his help may not slow down the Bloodwitch now hot on the girls' heels. All Safi and Iseult want is their freedom, but danger lies ahead. With war coming, treaties breaking and a magical contagion sweeping the land, the friends will have to fight emperors and mercenaries alike. For some will stop at nothing to get their hands on a Truthwitch."
Spoiler free:
First off I really liked the setting, we have this huge world that the main characters can explore through and so many countries. I can't wait to see how the next book brings more countries in to play.
Another thing was the dual points of view, now I usually don't like if there is more than one persons point of view but Dennard makes it work. I like how we moved from person to person, it gave a lot more information and we got to see inside more characters.
Second thing the powers, now me personally I was so hoping for witches that were a little cooler. I do get though that this story is clearly more about the politics and not the magic. I will say Iseult could have a great power if she would just take charge. Plus the extra things we get from different witches, each person has their own magic, I thought this was a very different take. I almost wish we would have gotten more about how the world was build and magic can in to play.
On on the characters, Safi so awesome a very headstrong character and Iseult is definitely her balance. I loved the way these two played off of each other, their friendship was so well written. Then we have Merik, the prince, yyyyeeeesss, he's great. I loved his character. Lastly the other main character Aeduan, the bloodwitch. Clearly he has the coolest powers in this; but is personality sucked like ugh I just wish he was a little bit more of a good guy.
Over all the story is really good, I did think there was some down time that we could have had a bit more action but everyone should know by now I love action. Also, I think the romance could have been played up a little bit more. Maybe in the next books we'll get more.
Over all I can't wait for the next book, I'm really interested to see where this story and characters go.
I do recommend that you give this book a read.
